Freshwater Fishing 101

The beginner's guide to simple gear, basic knots, effective baits, and where to find fish.

Essential Gear (keep it simple)

  • 6'6" Medium spinning rod + 2500 reel
  • 8-10 lb mono (or 15 lb braid + 8-10 lb mono/fluoro leader)
  • Hooks: sizes 2-1/0 / Split-shot / Bobbers
  • Lures: plastic worms, small jigs, inline spinners, 1/8-1/4 oz spoons
  • Pliers, line cutters, small tackle tray

Three Knots to Know

Improved Clinch

Thread, wrap 5-7, back through loop, moisten, tighten. Great for lures and hooks.

Palomar

Strong and fast. Double the line, overhand knot, loop over lure, cinch.

Double Uni (leader)

Join braid to mono/fluoro. 4-6 wraps braid, 3-4 wraps mono/fluoro, pull evenly.

Where to Find Fish

Target structure and edges: weed lines, docks, drop-offs, submerged logs, and shady banks. Dawn and dusk are usually best.

Quick Fish ID & Baits

  • Largemouth Bass: plastic worm, spinnerbait
  • Bluegill/Crappie: worms or small jigs under a bobber

Safe Handling

  1. Wet hands before touching fish
  2. Keep fish in water as much as possible
  3. Use pliers to remove hooks quickly
  4. Revive gently before release
