First Snook of the Winter
Cold mornings, moving water, and a subtle presentation paid off. This page breaks down the conditions, gear, and exact approach that led to my first snook of the winter - safely caught and released.
Winter Conditions (Florida Snook)
- Water Temperature: Cooler winter temps pushed snook into warm-water refuges
- Tide: Moving water was critical - slack tide produced no bites
- Location: Structure, culverts, and areas holding heat
- Season: Winter catch-and-release snook fishing in Florida

Gear Used
- Rod
- 7'0" Falcon Coastal Clear Water
- Reel
- Penn Slammer III 3500
- Line
- 30 lb braid with 30 lb mono leader
- Bait
- Live shrimp, free-lined
The Bite
The shrimp was allowed to drift naturally with the current along structure. The bite was subtle - just a slight tick - but steady pressure with the circle hook sealed it. Even in winter, snook will eat if the presentation is right.
Winter Snook Tips
- Slow down your presentation
- Target warm-water refuges
- Fish moving water only
Catch & Release Ethics
Winter snook are especially vulnerable. Handle gently, keep them wet, and release quickly. Always follow current Florida regulations.
